Recently, the Foreign Agricultural Service under the US Department of Agriculture released the latest report. According to its forecast, the global output of fresh oranges is expected to reach 46.1 million tons in the 2019/20 quarter, which is about 7.8 million tons less than the last quarter. The consumption, processing and export of global fresh oranges will be affected and will decline to varying degrees.
Brazil
On the one hand, it is a small year of production, and on the other hand, due to adverse weather factors, Brazil's orange production in the 2019/20 quarter (2019/07-2020/06) is expected to decrease by 19% to 15.6 million tons. The consumption of fresh oranges in China is estimated to be about 4.9 million tons, and about 10.7 million tons of fresh oranges will enter the processing end.
Mexico
Affected by drought and high temperature, the output of fresh oranges in Mexico in the 2019/20 season (2019/11-2020/10) is expected to halve to about 2.5 million tons, which will be the lowest output since the 1990s. Because the fresh orange trees in Mexico are generally older, and they need more water for irrigation, the impact of high temperature and drought is particularly "fatal". Not only is the yield severely damaged, but also the quality of fruit is not as good as in previous seasons. Small fruit size is a common phenomenon in most production areas. The consumption of fresh oranges is expected to shrink by one third, and the amount entering the processing end is also expected to decrease by about 60%, but the export will remain stable. About 95% of Mexico's fresh orange exports will enter the United States market.
China
China's orange production in the 2019/20 quarter (2019/11-2020/10) is generally optimistic, with ideal climate conditions. The output is expected to rise slightly, about 7.3 million tons. The market has a large demand for high-quality fresh oranges, and the import volume is expected to increase by 3% year-on-year. The main suppliers are expected to be Egypt and South Africa, whose exports to China account for nearly 70% of China's total imports.
U.S.A
The output of fresh oranges in the United States in the 2019/20 quarter (2019/11-2020/10) is expected to be about 4.7 million tons, down 5% year on year. The export volume is expected to increase, but the quantity of fresh oranges flowing into the processing end will decrease. Florida, the main producing area of fresh oranges in the United States, has been plagued by citrus yellow dragon disease in recent years, and the output has decreased by nearly one third compared with 20 years ago.
european union
As the output of Spain, a major producer, shrinks, the output of fresh oranges in the European Union is expected to be about 6.19 million tons in the 2019/20 quarter (2019/11-2020/10), down 9% year on year. The consumption, processing and export of fresh oranges are expected to be affected.
Egypt
Due to strong wind and high temperature during flowering and fruit setting, the output of fresh oranges in Egypt in 2019/20 (2020/01-2020/12) is expected to be about 3 million tons, down 17% year on year. The export volume is expected to decrease to 1.5 million tons, but this figure will still account for nearly 30% of the global total exports of fresh oranges. The main overseas markets include the European Union, Russia, Saudi Arabia and China.
South Africa
In the quarter of 2019/20 (2020/01-2020/12), the output of fresh oranges in South Africa will remain stable, estimated to be about 1.6 million tons. The export volume is estimated to be about 1.3 million tons, with the EU and China as the main export markets.
Morocco
Affected by insufficient rainfall and adverse weather factors, Morocco's output of fresh oranges in the 2019/20 season (2020/01-2020/12) is expected to be about 806000 tons, reducing the output by nearly one third. Due to this, the export, consumption and processing of fresh oranges will decrease.
Türkiye
The fresh orange production in Türkiye is also affected by weather conditions. The output of fresh oranges in the 2019/20 quarter (2019/11-2020/10) is expected to be about 1.7 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 11%. Exports and processing volumes are also expected to decline.
